Our Green Project goal is to bring houseplants into Long Meadow Elementary classrooms so students and staff can enjoy the numerous benefits and beauty of having plants inside. Plants improve air quality, reduce stress, improve concentration, foster a connection with nature, and offer opportunities for hands-on learning and scientific exploration.
Household plants offer numerous benefits for elementary classrooms, enhancing both the learning environment and student/staff well-being. Through this plant project, students will learn about providing a suitable environment for their classroom houseplants. Students will learn the responsibility of watering, providing light, nutrients and cleaning their classroom plants. They will become more environmentally conscious by discovering how plants grow and the benefits of spending time near plants. Household plants in the classroom will provide a connection to nature for everyone at our school, including those who do not love being outdoors.
The PTA Green Committee will partner with teachers and students to determine the growing conditions in each classroom, how to care for their plant and the benefits of having household plants. Plants will be repotted by students before arriving in classroom locations, giving students additional chances to make direct observations about their plant. Throughout the school year, students care for plants by developing watering calendars, cleaning calendars, and direct observations to nurture their classroom plants.
Bringing plants into classrooms will not only give students the responsibility for caring for nature, but will improve air quality, improve concentration, improve memory, reduce stress and foster a connection with nature.
